About Me

I grew up on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada and enjoy all that the beautiful west coast has to offer, especially hiking, biking, and camping.  I went to school at York University in Toronto where I earned my Bachelor of Arts in English and my Bachelor of Education in Primary/Junior Education.
After graduating, I immediately caught the travel bug and went overseas to South Korea where I taught Grade 2 and Art at an international school in a rural town in the southern-most province of Korea.  I stayed there for two years before making the move to Shenzhen, China three years ago where I currently teach Grade 1 at Shekou International School.  I am thoroughly enjoying my Chinese experience and love to try new foods, explore new parts of the country, and learn as much of the language as I can!
My zeal for learning new things transcends into my teaching: I've recently started experimenting with using Twitter in the classroom to connect globally with other first grade classes, a learning platform I garnered from my colleagues here at SIS.  As well as exploring new digital learning opportunities, I like to explore the cultures and traditions of the students in my class.  Each year provides new opportunities for me and my students to learn about and celebrate different traditions from around the world.
I am an avid reader and enthusiastic writer and I bring these passions into my teaching.  I have attended many workshops, conferences, and courses devoted to the teaching of reading and writing, including the Reading Institute at the Teachers College at Columbia University to learn more about the workshop approach.  I especially enjoy teaching literacy and celebrating my students’ reading and writing successes!
